Locus

Position of a gene/allele on a chromosom

Allele

Alternative forms of the same gene, and responsible for contrasting characteristics of a gene

Dominant allele

Influences the phenotype even in the presence of an alternative allele, encodes functional protein

Recessive allele

Influences the phenotype only in the presence of another identical recessive allele/homozygous recessive, encodes non-functional protein

Homozygous

Both alleles at a given locus are identical in diploid condition

Heterozygous

Different alleles are present in diploid condition

Co-dominant

Both alleles are equally expressed in the phenotype of the heterozygote

Incomplete dominance

The heterozygote exhibits a phenotype that is intermediate between the 2 homozygous forms

Linked genes

Genes coding for _ and _ are found on the same chromosome, do not show independent assortment, usually inherited together

Dominant epistasis

When a dominant allele at one locus produces a certain phenotype regardless of the allelic condition of the other locus

Recessive epistasis

Homozygous recessive genotype at one locus suppresses the expression of alleles at another locus

Duplicate recessive epistasis

Identical phenotypes are produced by both homozygous recessive genotypes
