What is induction?

Induction is the general term used to describe the whole process where new employees in a workplace ADJUST to their new roles and responsibilities in a work place. This is not to be confused with orientation.

Why is induction important?

Induction is important because we need to have employees productive and in their job as soon as possible.

Explain the Survival Curve (Hill and Trist, 1955)

The Survival Curve is made up of three phases employees go through when joining an organization. Induction Crisis (the job was oversold, it is an ability or fit mismatch), Differential Transit ( settling process; more comfortable; need to get to the phase quickly), and Settled Connection ("quasi-permanent")

Explain a traditional approach to employee induction

The traditional approach is an informational approach and formal welcome with a tour and handing over the employee handbook. No real consideration for the strategic issues such as the organizational culture. This approach usually lacks interest from both line managers and new employees.

What is the new perspective on employee induction?

New starters are the future so they should be a source of new focus, new energies, and new creativity to add to human capital pool. It is critical to get new hires productive as soon as possible.

What is the time length for a new hire to reach productive?

8 weeks for clerical, 20 weeks for professionals, and 26 weeks for executives

What is onboarding?

Onboarding is the mechanism where new employees acquire the knowledge, skills, and behavior to become effective members and insiders. It is concerned with getting new starters to feel like they belong and a part of the new organization as soon as possible.
