First reading |
Mostly a formality, the title of the bill is read followed by an order for it to be printed. THERE IS NO DEBATE |

Second reading |
FIRST DEBATE ON THE BILL. The government ministers responsible for the bill make statements followed by comments from relevant shadow ministers and then any backbench MPs |

Committee stage |
Temporary committees are set up to scrutinise the bill, there is a minimum of 16 members and a maximum of 50. The proportion of members from each party reflects their strength in the commons |

Finance bills |
These are constitutionally significant and so are deals with by a committee of the whole house, every MP can take part |

Report stage |
Amendments can be made at this stage by the Public Bill Committee and can be accepted or rejected by the whole house. MPs can also make amendments |

Third reading |
Final stage, the final debate happens. These debates are more focused and no further amendments can be made. The house then votes on whether to approve the third reading |

Further stuff |
If the HOL makes any amendments it goes back to the HOC where the amendments are either approved rejected or amended |

If the Commons makes further amendments it must be considered by the Lords and vice versa |
