First reading
Mostly a formality, the title of the bill is read followed by an order for it to be printed. THERE IS NO DEBATE
Second reading
FIRST DEBATE ON THE BILL. The government ministers responsible for the bill make statements followed by comments from relevant shadow ministers and then any backbench MPs
Committee stage
Temporary committees are set up to scrutinise the bill, there is a minimum of 16 members and a maximum of 50. The proportion of members from each party reflects their strength in the commons
Finance bills
These are constitutionally significant and so are deals with by a committee of the whole house, every MP can take part
Report stage
Amendments can be made at this stage by the Public Bill Committee and can be accepted or rejected by the whole house. MPs can also make amendments
Third reading
Final stage, the final debate happens. These debates are more focused and no further amendments can be made. The house then votes on whether to approve the third reading
Further stuff
If the HOL makes any amendments it goes back to the HOC where the amendments are either approved rejected or amended
Further stuff 2
If the Commons makes further amendments it must be considered by the Lords and vice versa
