How did empire influence Joseph Chamberlain's colonial secretary?

Seen as a man with a mission. Believed the "British is the greatest of the governing races the world has ever seen". Promoted investment in less profitable areas of empire to expand the economy. He wanted Tarrifs for non imperial countries. Believed in empire as the source for competing with USA and other growing economies. AJP Taylor highlighted he was "unscrupulous" in dealing with the boers.



His policies and "empire first" suggest he was pro indigenous people.

How did empire influence Cecil Rhodes

He believed that the British were the "finest race" and would better the world. He believed it was right for Anglo saxons to rule across the world cultivating civilisation. He wanted to establish trade route from Cairo to Cape.



He was driven by business not people he wanted a unified south Africa because of boer trade Tarrifs

How did empire influence Viceroy Curzon

Believed in moral imperial duty. Worked to strengthen British India. Curzon hesitant to appoint Indians in senior positions for fear they would abandon their position in time of emergency. Wanted the Raj for another 100 years.


He invested in agriculture and irrigation. Set up commissions and passed laws to improve Indian administration. Rearmed native regiments. Financed provisional police. Promoted science and medicine. Restored heritage cites like The Taj Mahaal



Pro Indian just racially and religiously insensitive as seen with his partition of bengal in 1905.

His religious belief guided his policy wanted to better Egyptians.

How did empire influence SA High Commissioner Alfred Milner.

He believed in British superiority. He believed war was the only way to deal with the boers and the Transvaal. He created Milner schools in Johannesburg. Demanded citizenship for utilanders who lived their for 5 years. His Milner kindergarten of lawyers helped resettle boers after boer war and promote economic growth.

What was people's perception of the boer war at the start and why?

There was much support for the war because of years of jingoism in the later 1890s. Newspapers presented the conflict as a moral crusade. The report of the relief of mountking lead to crowds of patriotic supporters in the streets.

We're the British winning the boer war?

No. British took heavy casualties. It lead to Lord Kutchner used scorched earth tactics and concentration camps. To win the war.

How did people's perception of the boer war change?

Emily Hobhouse report and Fawcett commission highlighted the atrocities occurring in the concentration camps. 26000/120000 died 80% under the age of 16. It lead to public out cry against the war. Liberal politician Lloyd George criticised policy of "extermination" and it's barbaric nature.

What were the outcomes of the Boer war in terms of attitudes.

Complete change in attitudes. The war saw the country question it's National Efficiency. 40% of recruits were unfit to fight. It lead to focus on domestic policy whilst imperial rhetoric took a back seat. Liberal election in 1906 demonstrated British desire for strong social reforms over imperialist policy.



National efficency was important. If Britain was not fit it couldn't run industry nor win a European war which was beginning to surface.



Social policy like the children's charter was introduced.

How did the press influence imperial attitudes?

1890-1914 Golden age of the press. Technical advancements and new journalism lead to cheap newspapers with short catchy headlines and politically motivated articles.


1896 Daily mail released cheap newspaper sold million plus copies a day during the Boer War . Hobson criticises it's "crude sensationalism" which promoted jingoism.

How did literature and music influence imperial attitudes.

Rudyard Kipling's poem "a white man's burden" detailed pro imperialist rhetoric with focus on Britain's "higher goals"



Kipling, Henty and Baker became best sellers for their grandeur of imperial wars



Nationalism present in music. Likes of Edward Elgar's pro imperialist music listened to across Britain's music halls.



Empire was also used to sell goods. Imperial advertising demonstrated the desire for imperialism more generally.
