7 requirements of a good hose? |
1) Able to withstand pressure changes & shock. 2) Smooth internal surface. 3) Durable/high resistance to abrasions. 4) Reliable. 5) Resistant to bursting, leaking, chemical damage and kinking when passed round bends/corners. 6) Shouldn't stretch more than 5% length or expand more than 10%. 7) Light and easy to handle. |
What is layflat hose? |
Hose that stays flat when there is no water in it |
What are the 4 lengths of layflat hose the LFB carry? |
45mm 70mm 90mm 150mm |
Description of 45mm & 70mm hose. |
Usually red 23m long 45mm=9kg, 70mm=15kg 15 bar max pressure
10 lengths of 70mm & 4 lengths 45mm carried on pump ladders & pumps |
Description of 90mm hose. |
Usually yellow 30m long 23.5kg 15 bar max pressure Up to 4km carried on hose laying units. |
Description of 150mm hose. |
Yellow 50m, 10m & 5m lengths Carried on the high volume pump |
Description of hosereel hose. |
22mm internal diameter 18.3m per length 4 lengths per drum 1 drum on each side of a pumping appliance |
Description of hard suction hose |
Designed to withstand external atmospheric pressure Lift water from open water supply into pump 2.44m long 100mm diameter 2 lengths on each appliance |
What size hoses can be used as a soft suction hose? |
70mm, 90mm and 150mm |
What is the Storz coupling? |
Interlocking coupling found on 90mm and 150mm hoses connected using 2 Storz spanners. |
What are the 4 different colour bandit straps? |
Yellow for Southern Orange for Eastern Green for Western Black for Training centres |
What 4 things do you look for on a hose to identify it? |
Colour of bandit strap 4 digit ID number 3 digit station call sign 1 digit hose diameter |
How are 45mm and 70mm hoses carried on appliances and what is the term used when unrolling the hose for use? |
Dutch rolled Bowled out |
How do you make up a hose? |
Disconnect at both ends and pull hose out straight
Expell excess water by under-running Place female coupling on top of male coupling Fold bight over and over again, roll towards couplings and take over them to expell any water left in the hose |
What 5 steps of care should be taken on all hoses? |
1) Ramped when laid across a road 2) Not kinked when under pressure 3) Not made up when frozen 4) Under-run and cleaned before stowing 5) Rotated between appliances and reserve store every 3 months |
What do you do when a hose is damaged at an incident? |
Temporarily made safe by using a hose bandage Replaced by new length asap Overhand knot tied at both ends Rolled up from male coupling |
When do you test a hose? |
On acceptance when delivered from workshops After operational use Annually |
What is an instantaneous coupling? |
2 sections: male and female 45mm and 70mm hose |
