Basic organs of a plant?
Flower, fruit, leaf, node, internode, stem, roots
Roots functions?
Anchoring, absorbing water and nutrients, storage of food and water, means of propagation
Stems functions?
Supporting leaves flowers and fruit, provides pathway for movement of substances between roots and leaves (translocation) photosynthesis with in green stems, means of propagation. Storage of food.
Nodes function?
The point of attachment of leaves and buds on a stem.
Internodes?
The area of stem between the nodes.
Leaves function?
Manufacture of food by means of photosynthesis, transpiration evaporation of water to allow the plant to cool
Leaves function?
Transpiration allows more water to enter roots, exchange of gases carbon dioxide and oxygen between plant and atmosphere, storage of food, propagation.
Flowers function?
Production of seed as result of pollination, attraction for pollinators, protection for sexual organs.
Fruit function?
Protection of the seed, helps in seed dispersal.
Explain tap root system?
Tap roots plants or dicots have one primary root from which secondary root system develops. Many woody plants ie trees the primary root disappears in juvenile stage replaced by a root plate and sinkers. Examples eucalypt trees
Explain fibrous roots?
A root system that has several main roots that grow near the base of the stem to form dense mass of LATERAL roots. Most commonly found in monocots ie grasses, palms.
Explain Adventitious roots?
These are roots that do not arise from seed but develop after the plant establishes. They grow from above ground portions of stem from cuttings or from stolons, rhizomes. Ie kikuyu
