How did WWII begin?

August 1939 members of the German SS dressed in Polish army uniforms attacked a German radio station. Hitler used this excuse and invaded Poland on 1 Sept. Two days later, Britain and France declared war on Germany

What was blitzkrieg?

They were German tactics used against Poland. They were later used against France and Russia


German air force: bombers destroyed most of the Polish air force while it was still on the ground. German bombers also destroyed roads, railways and bridges.


German panzer divisions moved quickly into Poland bypassing towns and cities and cutting off the polish army

What was the phoney war?

It was a period over the winter of 1939 when enemy troops faced each other across the Franco-German border but didn't fight. Instead Germany and Britain and France were getting ready for the next round of the war

What happened when Hitler conquered Denmark and Norway?

Hitler and his army overran Denmark in one day. At the same time a German invasion fleet landed at ports along the norwegian coast from Oslo in the south to Narvik in the north. German paratroopers were also dropped to control bridges, airports and radio stations. Within a short time, Norway was captured and Vidkun Quisling a norwegian sympathetic to Hitler was made Minister - president of Norway.

What happened when the invasion of France began?

He used blitzkrieg tactics and German tank divisions advanced quickly through the Ardennes. They cur off French and British troops who had invaded Belgium. The defeated armies were pushed back to Dunkirk on the English channel.

What was operation dynamo?

Britain sent all available boats - naval vessels, motor boats, tug boats, even paddle steamers to rescue the troops from the beaches. Over 30,000 soldiers were evacuated I'm seven days, but much equipment was lost

It was when France was divided into two parts. Most of the country was ruled directly by Germany whereas Vichy France was ruled by a french government under German control
