What was happening in Greece in 1947? |
Greece was one of the few countries in Eastern Europe that hadn't turned communist, and this was because the British Army prevented the Communist rebels taking over. However, the British could no longer afford to keep their soldiers in Greece, and told this to Truman. |

What was America's view on Communist growth in 1947? |
America was becoming increasingly alarmed by the growth of Soviet power, and when the British told President Truman that they couldn't afford to keep their soldiers in Greece any longer, he stepped in to help. |

Truman told Congress that it was America's job to stop communism getting any stronger (containment). This was called the Truman Doctrine. |

General Marshall made a visit to Europe to see what was needed, and came away thinking Europe was so poor that the whole of Europe was about to turn Communist. |

What did Marshall and Truman do about the state of Europe? |
Marshall and Truman went to Congress and asked for $17 billion to fund the European Recovery Programme (known as the Marshall Plan), with the aim of getting Europe's economy going again. Congress initially hesitated, but agreed in March 1948 when Czechoslovakia turned Communist. |
