The Swing Era

-also called the Big Band era
-about 10 people early on -standard became 18 to 22 players -rhythm section with bass, drums, piano, frequently guitar -woodwind section with saxophones and clarinets -brass section with trumpets and trombones -singer and conductor -bands were so big because swing dancers needed to hear the music in large clubs -saxophone became the main woodwind instrument, bumping out the clarinet -string bass replaced the left hand of the piano and the tuba -high hat cymbal became much more popular at this point -kept the beat in a more subtle fashion -random improve became much more rare -everyone in the band had to be able to read music so that every is playing together and sounding good -guitar bumped out the banjo |
