When his father died, his mother remarried so he went to Normandy to live with a cousin as a child. This was William the Bastard/ Conquerer

They owned most of the land and it was in the South - the most highly populated with the most towns and trade areas

Who supported Harthacnut in becoming king? How did Edward become his successor?

Edward and Alfred. Alfred was killed by the Godwin family so Edward becomes the successor.

To protect her sons - he had invaded and stolen the throne

Why did Emma feel betrayed by Cnut? Why did this lead to Alfred and Edward supporting Harthacnut upon their return to England?

Emma had a son with Cnut - Harthacnut. However, Cnut wanted to crown his son Harold (from another mother) instead. She then summoned Edward and Alfred back to support Harthacnut.

How did Harthacnut persuade Alfred and Edward to support him? What happened as a result of this?

He made Edward heir, leading to him being crowned in 1042

His Norman advisors - he wanted to reward them. The Godwins gained power as due to the tension, Edward sent some Norman advisors back home to replace them with Saxons - some of which were Godwins.

He divided up the country and put an earl in charge of each area of land that followed his orders.

What did England look like?

Most of the Southern half was covered in forest with trees cleared for small villages

Peasants - worked on farm land owned by someone else

Anglo Saxons were very Christian and believed the Pope in the Vatican (Rome) was God’s messenger on Earth.

What power did the church have?

People listened to its rules and it was a major land owner

Why wasn’t England well defended?

It had hardly any castles and few of the 2 million people lived in the North and Western parts

Why was England an attractive place to live?

England had a minting system which meant it made coins that could be used as money which meant people could buy or sell things from eachother

Why was England considered economically advanced?

It had lots of resources that could be sold, old Kings had set up trade links with Scandinavian countries and the current king Edward was brought up in France so developed trade links there
