Give details about the battle of Hastings |
Williams invasion fleet consisted of 700 ships and a large army. William landed at Pevensey bay on 29th September - he built a castle Harold Godwin started marching south. He exhausted his soldiers The two sides met at Senlac Hill, Hastings. HC gathered his men at the top of the hill - strong wall of Sheilds Battle took 2 hours. A rumor started that William was killed. HC soldiers started to leave W army pretended to run away and then they chased them down the hill W used arches to break up the Saxon wall. HG was killed. |

How did people react to William becoming king? |
They rebelled. The biggest rebellion was in north of England in 1069 It was led by Edgar, the son of Edward the exiled - he had a blood claim to he throne William didn’t trust the English people, so he ordered villages to be destroyed and burned. This is known as the harrying on the north As a result of this the population was reduced to 75%. He also poisoned the land so they couldn’t grow crops.
After all of this he had control of the north and then set loyal people in place to control the north |

How did William take long term control of England? |
Castles - he built over 100 castles. From the castle the Normans could control the local area The feudal system - William could not be everywhere at the same time - which is him lending land put to other people and that way all of the farming work was done for him He used the Domesday book - this was a way to keep check of the value of all things in England |

How did the Norman conquest change England and Western Europe? |
It broke England’s ties with Denmark and Norway and connected it to Normandy and Europe It got rid of all the Saxon nobles It gave the Norman landowners great power and allowed them to rebel against William in 1070 It reversed the status of women
