describe the harlem renaissance in a few sentences
The Harlem Renaissance loomed as "the symbol of liberty and the Promised Land to Negroes everywhere." The migration of blacks made Harlem a vital place that attracted talented artists and writers. It broke the older genteel traditions of black literature to reclaim a cultural identity with African roots. One famous writer was Langston Hughes.
describe The Temperance movement
The temperance movement proved to be the most effective arena for evangelical social reform. The American Temperance Society performed group confession and prayer, a focus on the family and the spiritual role of women, and sudden, emotional conversion. These groups tried to get rid of alcohol consumption because it was corrupting society.
Explain social Darwinism
Social Darwinism is the idea during the Gilded Age that stronger groups in society survive, and the weaker people die out.
What happened in the Zimmerman Telegram?
Newspapers published an intercepted communication from Germany's foreign secreteary to the German minister in Mexico City. The telegram urged Mexico to join the Central powers in the war and in return they would help Mexico recover the lost territory of Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. This telegram inflamed anti-German sentiment.

Jane Adams was a classic reformer in the progressive era. She created a community center to help the poor in Chicago. It was called the Hull House, and many others were created later. It helped with neighborhood reform.
Talk about Booker T. Washington
He was a black leader who had retreated from the defiant stand of an older generation of black abolitionists. His stance was known as "accommodationistst," because it gave up on political protest and avoided direct assault on white supremacy. He emphasized black economic progress because southern prosperity required an efficient labor force. He preached the virtues of thrift, hard work, and property ownership because he believe the white elite were crucial allies because only they could change the South.

President of U.S. from 1901 to 1909. Loved capitalism, set up national parks, and has a heart for the poor. Believed people should fight hard for what they believe in. He is all about American Glory, works diplomatically and can keep control if things get out of hand. He thinks weakness is the greatest of all crimes. He lead a charge on Spain up San Juan Hill.

Promoted intellectual approach for black education. Booker T. Washington and him were rivals but had the same goal for African Americans. He was the first to graduate from Harvard with a PHD. Fled from the U.S. in 1963 because he was criticized for being a communist.
Talk about Margaret Sanger
Women’s right’s activist. Contraceptives was an unspoken subject, society was all about pro-creation. Once fled to Europe to avoid arrest for reforming the idea of contraceptives. Sanger fought for birth control for women and gradually gained women access to contraceptives.
What is Taylorism?
Theory that analyzes workflow processes and improves labor productivity. Developed by Fredrick Winslow Taylor. Believed traditional work processes should be replaced by precise procedures developed after careful study of an individual at work.
Talk about Woodrow Wilson
U.S. president from 1913-1921. A leading mind in the Progressive Era. His presidency was during WW1, he wanted to remain neutral for quite some time, he didn’t think U.S. was ready. Finally declared war in 1917 when Germany began bombing allied ships. Wilson created league of nations.
Talk about the Progressive Era/Social Reform
Industrialization influenced changes in the U.S. and many reforms were a response to it; morally, economically, and socially. Women’s suffrage played a big role in the progressive era where women fought for their rights radically. African Americans also fought for their rights.
