1. Persepolis Commemoration (October 12-16, 1971)

* Lavish celebration costing millions of dollars
* Was a terrible political move because he had this celebration when his people were starving
* he saw it as a symbol of how powerful he was but everyone else saw it as inappropriate and it alienated him from his people

* the ayatollas have temporary guardianship of the shia muslims until the macti comes back
* Khomeini implemented this when he came into power

* abolish feudalism, education reform, dam construction, social security, price stablization, health and reconstruction corps, etc.
* caused countryside to go from feudalism to sharecropping
* was a good thing, shah wanted people to like his image
* called the white revolution because it wasn’t red/communist or violent

* important because westernized iran for a while

* Iran Secret Police established by Mohammad Reza Shah with help of US in 1957
* probably killed Ali Shariati, who was important in building up the revolution against the shah

9. Tiananmen Square Protests and Massacre (April 15-June 4, 1989)

* In china in 1989, Deng had done the capitalist thing for a while in shenzhen
* because this was happening, the people were like hey, now we want democracy
* They staged a potest in Tiananmen square in the center of Beijing, the capital of China
* the military slaughtered them
* it was caught on TV
* huge international attention
* demonstrates idea that liberalizing china’s economy did not make it a democracy

* person who started socialist market economy in china in shenzhen in 1980s
* important because that market economy is why the US trades with China so much
* ruled china 1970s-1990s

* China’s equivalent of the 5 year plan

* it was Mao’s own people who were dying
* important because caused the cultural revolution

* His visit to poland in 1979 started the Solidarity party and was important in causing the overthrow of the communist regime in Poland

* was also a secular leader which shows shahs disconnect from his population, which was religious

* the shah of iran was trying to connect himself to the imperial grandeur of the ancient persian empire as exemplified by cyrus
