FACTS: Hayes (Republican) vs. Tilden (Democrat). Tilden wins popular vote, Hayes wins electoral vote. Dems used violence and intimidation to drive blacks and Reps away from the polls. Disputed election, FL, LA, SC hang in the balance, commission appointed to resolve election, 5 reps from Senate/House/Sup Court, votes to give all 20 votes to Hayes, Dems threaten to block until Repubs give concessions
SIG: First election in over two decades where Dems win pop vote, showed strength of Dems, "end of Reconstruction," showed how Repubs were willing to compromise with South |

FACTS: Same as Election of 1876 - Hayes vs. Tilden, disputed election in FL/SC/LA, commission votes to give all 20 elec votes to Hayes, Dems threaten to block unless given concessions:
1) Remove fed troops in South 2) Dem appt to patronage position in Hayes' cabinet (Postmaster Gen) 3) Construction of transcontinental railroad in South 4) Legislation to initiate South industrialization SIG: Considered to be "end of Reconstruction," helped Dems regain control over politics, departure over concern for fate of blacks - betrayal |
