Noun

A person common place, thing, or idea. Does it form its plural by adding -s or -es? Can it be preceded by a, and, or the? Can it be made possessive by adding 's or '? Used in place of it? You only have to answer one of these questions for the word and question to be a noun.

Pronoun

Takes the place of a noun or a group of nouns.

Adjective

Modifies a noun or a pronoun and answers which one, what kind how many, or whose.

Verb

States the action or state of being.

Adverb

Modifies a verb, adjective or another one of itself. They often end in -ly. They answer the questions when?, Where?, How?, Or to what extent?

Prepositions

Shows the relationship between a noun and the sentence in another noun or group nouns. (Position, location, time). To test for common __________ we use the plane and cloud test.

Conjunction

Connect words or groups of words.

Interjection

Expresses strong emotions (usually comes at the beginning of a sentence).

Prepositional phrase

A preposition plus a noun or pronoun that is its object and any modifiers that function with it. These things function as either adjectives or adverbs within the sentence. Example: I live on the corner (on the corner).

Simple subject

The noun or pronoun that the sentence is about.

Simple predicate (verb phrase)

The action or state of being of the subject.

Direct object

Received the action of an action verb ( usually follows the verb). For example, he hit the ball (ball).

Indirect object

The now and a pronoun that answers " to whom? "Or "for whom?" About the direct object. For example, he threw me the ball (me).

Objective compliment

And now, pronoun, or adjective that follows the direct object and renames it or tells what the direct object has become. For example,we named him president (president).

Predicate adjective

Adjectives that come in the predicate after linking verbs and modify the subject of the sentence. Example, the room is green (green).

Predicate nominative

A noun or pronoun in the predicate following a linking verb and renaming the subject. For example, he is president (president).

Proper nouns

Name a specific person, place, thing, or idea. They are capitalized.

Common nouns

Name a general person, place, then, or idea. They are not capitalized.
