What is the difference between gram positive and negative?

Positive = THICK cell wall, keeps blue stain


Negative = THIN cell wall with inner and outer membrane, stains red

What are the 2 types of gram positive cocci?

Staphylococci (clusters) & Streptococci (strips)

How do you test for the type of staphylococci & what are the 2 types?

Does it clot with COAGULASE?



Yes = S. aureus


No = Coagulase negative staph

How do you test for the type of streptococci & what are the 3 types?

What extent do they break down blood?



Completely = beta haemolytic (e.g. group A)


Partially = alpha haemolytic (e.g. pneumococcus)


None = non haemolytic (e.g. enterococcus)

Give 3 examples of gram positive bacilli

Listeria, cornynebacterium, clostridium

Give 2 examples of gram negative cocci

N. meningitidis, N. gonorrhoea

Give 4 examples of gram negative bacilli

Bacteroides, pseudomonae, haemophilua, enterobacteraciae

Give further examples of enterobacteraciae

E. coli, kiebelella, enterobacter, proteus

What is different about atypical bacteria? Give 2 examples

They don't have a normal cell wall and so are not sensitive to antibiotics that target the cell wall.
