This paper looks at the difference between gram negative and gram positive bacterium. This is important when doing gram staining experiments. It also looks at the importance of microbiology.
DIFFERENCES OF GRAM NEGATIVE AND GRAM POSITIVE BACTERIUM
There are notable differences between the gram negative and gram positive bacterium. Gram negative bacterium is surrounded by a thin peptidoglycan cell wall while Gram positive has a thick layer of peptidoglycan. The peptidoglycan around the gram negative is about 8-10 mm while in gram positive is 20-80 mm. The peptidoglycan is essential for the structure, for replication, and for survival in the normally hostile conditions in which bacteria grow, so gram positive bacteria survive hostile …show more content…
Porins protein are present in Gram negative while are absent in the Gram positive bacterium. These are structures that control what goes into the cell so the gram negative becomes impermeable to most molecules as they have to pass through the porins and if they do not fit into the porins they are unable to pass through (Irving, 2005). Gram negative is more resistant to molecules while Gram positive is susceptable to molecules. Gram negative has more lipids as compared to Gram positive. This is because the lipids are attached to the outer membrane which is present in the gram positive and not in the gram negative. Chemical composition of Gram negative includes lipopolysaccharide, lipoporteins and peptoglycan while Gram positive includes petidoglycan, teichoic acid and lipoteichoic acid. Examples of gram negative include E coli and Gram positive S. aureus.
SIMILARITIES OF GRAM NEGATIVE AND GRAM POSITIVE BACTERIUM
There are not many similarities between the gram negative and gram positive. They both have the peptidoglycan surrounding the periplasmic space. The both have circular DNA.

IMPORTANCE OF MICROBIOLOGY
Microbiology is the study of microorganisms and their interaction with the humans and environment. Microorganisms are small organisms that cannot be seen with an unaided eye (naked eye). It is through microbiology that the existence of lead to the discovery of microorganisms, and with this discovery there was a lot of changes to everyday life.
IMPORTANCE IN HUMAN LIFE
Photosynthesis was able to take place because of Cyanobacteria. This was because Cyanobacteria obtain its energy through photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is important to human life because of the byproduct of the process which is oxygen. Oxygen is vital to humans as it allows humans and animals to carry out processes in the body. This makes microorganisms important to living things on earth as for without oxygen there will be no life. There are also microorganisms found in the human body which assist in different ways such as aiding digestion (Aggarwai, 2010).
