A state when animals sleep through cold weather. |
Example: what animals do during winter |
FOOD WEB |
a pattern of combined food chains |
has lots of animals |
CARNIVORES |
an animal that eats only meat |
Example: Lion |
BEHAVIOR |
the way an animal acts |
example: a cat is stalking a mouse. It is a hunter by nature. |
INSTINCT |
an animal is born knowing this behavior |
for example : spider spinning a web For humans: a baby crying |
FOOD CHAIN |
is the path along which energy is passed from one organism to another |
first is eaten by the second, the second iseaten by the third and so on |
PHYSICAL ADAPTATION |
a change in an animal's physical makeup that makes an organism better able to survive in its environment |
example: thick fur |
CAMOUFLAGE |
the act of concealing the identity of something by modifying its appearance |
example: change in color |
PREY |
animals that are eaten and caught by other animals |
Which one is the prey? |
PREDATOR |
a carnivore that haunts and kills other animals for food and has adaptations that help it capture the animals it preys upon |
Which one is the predator? |
DECOMPOSER |
an organism that obtains nutrients by consuming and decaying organic matter |
INCOMPLETE METAMORPHOSIS |
metamorphosis where an animal looks the same as an adult as they did as a baby. They simply grow larger. |
COMPLETE METAMORPHOSIS |
A type of metamorphosis characterized by 4 dramatically different stages. |
CONSUMER |
a living thing that needs to eat to obtain energy |
can not make its ownfood |
PRODUCER |
a living thing that can make food with energy from the sun |
they start the food chain |
HERBIVORE |
An animal that only eats plants |
another example: a deer feeds on grass |
OMNIVORE |
a living organism that eats plants and animals |
Example: Human |
In what ways are the two types of metamorphosis different? How are they Similar? |
Different: -Complete Metamorphosis: A type of metamorphosis characterized by 4 dramatically different stages. ( egg--> larva-->pupa--> adult) -Incomplete Metamorphosis: metamorphosis where an animal looks the same as an adult as they did as a baby. They simply grow larger. (egg-->nymph-->adult) They are similar in that they both start their first stage with an egg. |

How do people affect an ecosystem? Explain a negative and a positive way. |

ECOSYSTEM |
An ecosystem includes all of the living things (plants, animals and organisms) in a given area, interacting with each other, and also with their non-living environments |
How is a herbivore different from a carnivore? |
Herbivore eats only plants, while the carnivore eats only meat. |
How does a secondary consumer (in a food chain) get its energy when it eats a primary consumer? |
it gets its energy as it eats the primary consumer which is the rabbit and the rabbit gets its energy from the producer which makes its own food by the energy of sunlight. |
Example: Secondary consumer--> fox Primary Consumer--> rabbit Producer--> plants |
