Define sovereignty

- means the ability to rule absolutely within a territory


- all states are considered equal to one another


- free to set their own foreign policy: states will decide how to operate within their own boundaries

Define government

The agency that makes and enforces the laws

What are the four main roles of government

1. Makes laws- legislative


2. Protecting the state- "common defense"


3. Keep order inside the nation state- "domestic tranquility"


4. Provide services- promote the general welfare

Define the force theory

The state was developed by force, a person or group conquered a given territory and forced everyone living in their territory to submit to their will

Define the evolutionary theory

- went from early family, to the clan, to the tribe, to agricultural society, then to government

Define divine right theory

Authority from God, "God gave those of royal birth the right to rule", accused of treason or heresy if they didn't agree with the government, religion is the basis of their authority

Define social contract theory

The state exists to serve the will of the people, advances by the English philosopher Thomas Hobbes, life would be horrible without government to protect us from each other and from outsiders.

Hobbes

English philosopher that was apart of the social contract theory, claimed that to civilize their community, the people should get together and give power to a sovereign governmental authority

Locke

Philosopher apart of the social contract theory, for him the contract worked both ways

Magna Carta

Included right such as trial by jury, due process of laws, and protection from arbitrary taking life, liberty and property

English bill of rights

Declared that rights aren't granted by the throne, the document prohibited a standing army, required free parliamentary elections, declared taxation required consent from parliament and declared petitioning the king was legal

Natural rights philosophy

Focus on the individual


Hobbes: state of nature leads to "war" of every man against every man


Locke: in the state of nature all people are free, equal and rational but people cannot survive
