Ace
Hole in one
Addressing the Ball
Taking the stance and grounding the club, except that in a hazard a player has addressed the ball when he or she has taken his or her stance.
Approach Shot
A stroke played to the putting green
Apron
The area surrounding the putting green
Birdie
A score of one under par
Bite
The backspin on the ball causing it to stop upon landing on the ground
Bogey
A score of one over par
Break of green
The slope or contour of the putting green
Bunker
A pit filled with sand, often called a sand trap
Caddie
A person who helps with clubs and otherwise assists the player as the game progresses
Casual Water
Any temporary unintended body of water not recognized as a hazard
Chip Shot
A close shot to the putting green. Also called a run-up shot
Cup
Hole into which the ball is played. The objective of golf.
Divot
A piece of turf cut out by clubs that should be replaced and securely tamped

A hole in which the fairway curves significantly in one direction

Explosion Shot
Shot played from a sand trap in which the player attempts to contact the sand slightly behind the ball for optimum ball placement on the green

A shot angled in one direction that curves towards the opposite direction, similar to a curveball in baseball
Fairway
The mowed grassy area between the tie and putting green
Fat Shot
A wide swing in which the ground is struck before the ball
Flag Stick
Marker indicating the location of the hole
Fore
A cry of warning to anyone potentially endangered by a golf ball
Foursome
Four players who may or may not be playing
Green
Area of short grass around a hole intended for putting into the hole
Gross Score
Direct count of a player's total strokes in Stroke Play before any calculations
Ground Under Repair
Area under which work is being done, marked by stakes or lines. A ball played in one can be lifted and dropped out.
Grounding the Club
Placing the sole of the club on the ground in preparation for making a stroke
Handicap
Approximate number of strokes a player plays over par. Used to equalize players of different ability.
Hazard
Bunkers and water hazards
Hole
Can refer to the hole that the ball is played into or a division of the golf course
Hook
A shot that curves to the left mid-flight

Pronation
An anatomical term to describe the turning of the hand and forearm inward. Supination is the opposite action in which the hand and forearm are turned out so the palm is facing up.
Provisional Ball
A second ball to be played if the first one could have been lost or caught in hazards
Pull
A shot hit to the left of the intended target
Push
A shot hit to the right of the intended target
Rough
The areas bordering the fairway in which tall grass and weeds grow

Slice
A shot that curves to the right mid-flight
