Globalisation

Rise of US multinational corps was major factor in development of globalisation. Globalisation describes worldwide spread of trade + commerce by large multinational corps. As result, good,services + culture become increasingly similar in many parts of the world.

Globalisation around the World- companies

US Companies spread new products + ideas around world. McDonald's, Levi's + Coca Cola found in almost every country. Yellow M MacD's symbol of Globalisation all over world.

Pop Culture

Parallel with these developments- US culture in form of pop music + films available everywhere. English most commonly studied second language in world. These developments in trade + culture meant economies of world became more integrated.

Anti-American Feeling in Africa, Asia + Middle East

American goods + services became increasingly popular, anti American feeling developed in Africa Asia and Middle East. In these countries, people resented decline of their native culture + way of life in the face in increasing 'Americanisation'.

Spread of multinational corps was helped by number of international agreements + bodies that created condts for free trade. International Monetary fund 1946 set up to encourage international cooperation in finance + to promote greater stability in exchange rates between different currencies. US Dollar world's main currency.

World Bank 1946 + General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) 1947

1946 World Bank est. to give loans for development projects especially in developing countries. 1947 General Agr on Tariffs + Trade (GATT) signed by all western govts- began policy of reducing teriffs on goods on gradual way. GATT's eventual aim was to aid all tariffs on international trade + create complete free trade.

PRO Globalisation

Real debate about Globalisation didn't start til 1990's, but evidence of concern in 80's. Support- pointed to fact that increase in world trade helping to reduce world poverty + Argued that poorer countries actually increasing their share of world trade. Moreover, multinationals employed local people + improved skills of workforce

ANTI Globalisation

Opposition of Globalisation argued that US corps invested in poorer countries in order to make greater profits-paid lower wages to natives. In addition, they said that Globalisation spread American culture at expense of native culture. Globalisation widening gulf between rich + poor countries. More importantly, claimed globalisation was new form of imperialism- large countries control economy of weaker ones
