Black Death
1347: Fleet of sailors from Genoa left port in Caffa and sailed for Messina Sicily. By the time they reached Sicily they were sick and dying. Soon after docking, the townspeople became sick as well. The disease spread throughout Italy within months. The primary reason for the spread was increased trade with the East.
1348: Reached France and Spain. 1/3 of the European population died. (Years of Rice and Salt)
Bubonic plague spread by fleas on rats. Fleas would contaminate clothes and food and spread the disease.
Disease killed within 2-3 days. People didn’t know that a fleabite caused it and as a result didn’t seek early treatment.
Symptoms: swelling and black bruises on skin> fever, convulsive cough, spit blood, stink, died in agony.
