DIGESTIVE SYSTEM ALSO KNOWN AS,AND RESPONSIBLE FOR :

GASTROINTESTINAL SYSTEM- PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL BREAKDOWN OF FOOD.

FOOD IS TAKEN INTO BLOODSTREAM AND USED BY CELLS AND TISSUES.

WHAT DOES THE SYSTEM CONSIST OF?

ALIMENTARY CANAL AND ACCESSORY ORGANS.

GI TRACT/ALIMENTARY CANAL- A long, muscular tube that begins at the mouth and includes the mouth (oral cavity), pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and anus

ACCESSORY ORGANS- salivary glands, tongue, teeth, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas

1.INGESTION

2.PERISTALISIS

3.DIGESTION

4.ABSORPTION

5.DEFACATION

1.Taking of food into the body

2.Physical movement along the tract

3. Mechanical and chemical breakdown of food

4.Passage of food from digestive tract into body

5.Elimination of indigestible substances from body

FN OF ACCESSORY DIGESTIVE ORGANS:

Provide mechanical and chemical mechanisms to aid digestion

PARTS OF ALIMENTARY CANAL:

1. MOUTH

ALSO CALLED BUCCAL OR ORAL CAVITY.

While food is in mouth, it is

– Tasted

– Broken down physically by teeth

– Lubricated and partially digested by saliva

– And swallowed

2.TEETH

TOTAL TEETH : 32

EACH JAW : 16

INCISORS- 4

CANINES-2

PREMOLARS-4

MOLARS-6

DENTAL FORMULA OF ADULT FOR EACH QUARTER- 2,1,2,3.

3.TONGUE

*SKELETAL MUSCLE AND MUCOUS MEMBRANE

*FLOOR OF ORAL CAVITY

PAPILLAES:

-- FUNGIFORM- TIP AND EDGES

--FILLIFORM-ANTERIOR 2/3 , NUMEROUS, SMALLEST

--CIRCUMVALLATE - BASE ,LARGEST. CONTAIN TASTEBUDS.

4.SALIVARY GLANDS

SALIVA INTO ORAL CAVITY

3 PAIRS -

--> PAROTID

--> SUBMANDIBULAR

-->SUBLINGUAL

OPENING OF EACH DUCT:

PAROTID DUCT--MASSETER MUSCLE--PIERCE BUCCINATOR MUSCLE--OPENS INTO MOUTH OPP THE UPPER 2ND MOLAR TOOTH.

SUBMANDIBULAR DUCT : OPENS ON FLOOR OF MOUTH ON EITHER SIDE OF FRENULUM OF TONGUE.

5. PHARYNX

*SKELETAL MUSCLE

*BEGINS AT SKULL AND UPTO C6 LEVEL

3 PARTS-- 1.NASOPHARYNX

2.OROPHARYNX

3.LARYNGOPHARYNX

6.ESOPHAGUS

25 CM- INFRONT OF V.C AVD BEHIND TRAHEA, HEART.

BEGINS-C6LEVEL

COLLAPSIBLE muscular tube passing through esophageal opening of the diaphragm to end in the stomach at T10 vertebral level.

Secretes mucus and transports food

7.STOMACH, BLOOD SUPPLY

mixing chamber and storage area for ingested food

Mucous membrane lining stomach contains folds called rugae for increased volume

4 main regions

1. Cardiac region

2. Fundus

3. Body

4. Pylorus

Pyloric antrum and canal Pyloric sphincter Lesser and greater curvatures

Coeliac artery through its branches.

Veins drain into portal vein.

8.PANCREAS

A glandular organ located behind stomach.

Parts: Head, Body and Tail

Produces pancreatic juices containing enzymes to digest food. It is both exocrine and endocrine gland.

Juices enter duodenum through pancreatic duct

Produces insulin by the beta cells present mainly in the tail of the pancreas.

Insulin is secreted into bloodstream to regulate metabolism (or burning) of carbohydrates.
