What diarrhea is characterized by blood and leukocytes and is of low volume.
Inflammatory diarrhea. Diseases causing it are Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and IBD.
Pathogens causing it are Shigella, campylobacter jejuni, and Entamoeba histolytica.
What diarrhea is characterized by loss of isotonic fluid, high volume, no inflammation in bowel mucosa. With a stool osmotic gap of <50 mOsm/Kg.
Secretory Diarrhea.
Causes: Laxatives, production of enterotoxins that stimulate Cl channels, increased serotonin from carcinoid, Vibrio Cholera and enterotoxigenic E Coli.
What diarrhea is characterized by a osmotically active substance drawing fluids out of the body, high volume, no inflammation, and a stool osmotic gap >100 mOsm/Kg.
Osmotic Diarrhea.
Causes: Laxatives containing Magnesium sulfate. Disaccharidase deficiency, "stunned Gut" in Giardiasis.
