what does a rock's color indicate?
clues on oxygen level of the depositions environment (where it originated from)
what does black indicate of a rock?
large amounts of organic material; organic carbon ($); anoxic (poor oxygen and below water); swamps, lagoon, deep ocean
what does a white/grey rock indicate?
shallow moving h2o (well oxygenated); rivers, shallow ocean, beaches.
what does a red/brown rock indicate?
mostly O2; land/exposed to air; deposited by wind/water (left high and dry exposing it to atm.); red = iron oxide or rust; formed on continents (desert, alluvial fans, floodplains [soils])
what does grain size indicate of a rock?
clues into the energy of the depositional environment.
what types of rocks are fine sized?
(low energy) Mud and when pressurized -> shale; silt -> siltstone; clay -> claystone
where are fine size grains found? (like mud and shale)
floodplains or ocean floor; low energy
what rocks have grain size I'm between fine and coarse?
(medium energy) sand [wind doesn't allow for it to stay deposited] -> sandstone
what rocks have coarse grain size?
(High energy) gravel -> conglomerate
