What drives movement of the plates?

The movement of plates is driven by convection currents within the earth's asthenosphere.

How are the 2 major ocean masses changing?

The Atlantic Ocean is getting wider and the Pacific Ocean is becoming narrower.

How fast do plates move?

2 - 10cm per year.

What are the 3 types of convergent boundaries?

Oceanic crust - oceanic crust, where one plate subducts the other. Oceanic crust - continental crust, where the oceanic crust subducts the continental crust. Continental crust - continental crust, where both plates do DO NOT subduct and result in heavy folding.

What is subduction?

This refers to the movement of one plate under another plate at a convergent boundary.

What is the first evidence of plate tectonics?

The earth's modern day contients seem to "fit" together.

What fossil evidence supports the plate tectonic ideology?

Fossils of similar species were found on contients that are now separated by great distance.

How do glaciers help support the plate tectonic ideology?

Glaciers exist in parts of the world that do not currently experience freezing temperatures (this implies that land masses move throughout time).

Evidence - what did using the seismometer discover for the plate tectonic ideology?

Seismometers used for weapons testing after WWII showed a pattern of earthquakes and geologic activity. This lead to the discovery of the ring of fire.

What is glacial quarrying?

This is when a glacier freezes to the rock landscape underneath, it allows the ice to "pluck" rocks as it moves by, especially when it's motion comes from internal deformation.

What is glacial abrasion?

Once a glacier starts carrying rock debris, it has the ability to scrape the underlying landscape. The rock scraping the landscape can gouge any rock softer than itself.
