What is a tsunami?

It is formed when the sea floor moves abruptly. It is usually caused by an earthquake but can also be caused by volcanoes.

How do volcanoes form?

Volcanoes form around vents from the oceanic crust that release magma into the earth's surface.

What are the 2 different types of volcano eruptions?

Nonexplosive and explosive.

What causes volcanoes?

From divergent plates, under the ocean, subduction zones, hot spots such as Hawaii.

The composition of magma determines whether it is explosive or not. What does high water content mean?

It is likely to be explosive.

High silica content in magma makes it more likely to be explosive. Why?

Silica has a thick, stiff consistency, flows slowly, and tends to harden in the volcano's vent.

What erupts from a volcano?

Pyro clastic material, rock fragments created by explosive eruptions, magma explodes from volcanoes and solidifies in the air, material is called tephra once it hits the ground.

How do volcanologists predict eruptions?

Measuring small quakes, measuring slope, measuring volcanic gases, measuring temperature from orbit
