Increasingly urban, on the move and connected


Economic impacts for HICs - economy based pn services and tertiary leads to increased wages and high quality of life but deindustrialisation has led to job losses and unemployment




For LDCs - Switched on countries have attracted investment from TNCs which brings wealth. The income gap has risen as wealth isn't evenly distributed, some LDCs stay poor

Outsourcing to India

For the UK - Cheaper operating costs for western countries but loss of 2350 jobs, loss of peoples salaries, loss of jobs in insurance, negative multiplier effect




For India - from 50 to 800 call centres in 3 years, demand for 150,000 new jobs. Increased GDP and employment. But long hours under harsh conditions with little pay and low job security

Globalisation to Cuba

After Soviet Union collapse (1989) Cuba faced crisis, Virgin direct flights in 2004 meant that a tourist enclave was created with lots of new visitors. This brings benefits as Cuba has had internet and TV introduced however culture is eroded


+ Money brought in from rich tourists means locals have more money, 80000 Jobs created in Tourism


- Foreign countries take control of hotels (Spain and Canada), creates a dependency culture

Environmental actions from Globalisation

Recycling schemes - eg Devon, reduces land fill amounts but can be difficult and expensive to sort out - local


Carbon credits - UK - reduces amounts of greenhouse emissions, gives money but bad for developing countries as they need to industrialise - global


Biofuels - Malaysia - better for environment than fossil fuels but land is needed plus lots of energy - National


Green taxes - Congestion charge - incentive to stop polluting but is not progressive tax so rich don't get affected - local/national

Social costs of globalisation

Strategies to help the poor are controversial e.g. Aid causing dependency, by buying fair trade goods people receive fair prices for their items and reduces social costs. Fair trade goods also secure better living and working conditions for farmers
