What is the greenhouse effect? |
The natural process by which the atmosphere traps heat from the sun. |
Name three ways in which global warming occurs. |
- Deforestation releases a lot of carbon into the atmosphere. - Cattle farming releases methane. - Landfills may release many harmful gases. - Burning of fossil fuels releases many gases. |
Apart from an increase in temperature what other evidence is there for global warming? |
- Rising sea levels. - Ice cores that show the levels of gases in the air. - Extreme weather events are becoming more frequent. |
What are some ways of reducing the impact of climate change? |
- Defend and protect coastal areas from flooding. - Encourage research into crops that will withstand drought and diseases. - Develop more efficient ways of predicting and preparing for extreme weather events. |
What is the Kyoto Protocol? |
An international agreement between 37 industrialised countries, which sets binding targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It was formulated in Japan in 1997 and enforced in February 2005. |
What are some impacts of climate change on agriculture?
- Agricultural land on the edge of deserts becomes unusable, through the process of desertification. - Crops could be wiped out in low-lying areas that suffer from flooding. - The growing season in some areas will increase. This is a benefit to places such as the UK as more crops could be grown. |
What are some impacts of climate change on population?
- People will migrate from areas suffering drought. Any that remain will be in danger of dying from starvation and lack of water. - 17 million people in Bangladesh alone will be threatened by flooding. - As the world population increases, more people will be living in cities located on the coast. |
What are some impacts of climate change on water and ice?
- Communities that use the melt water from glaciers may see this supply decrease. Especially in Asia. - Economies that rely on skiing as a form of income may suffer as the skiing season is reduced or disappears through lack of snow. - Less fresh water will be available in coastal areas as it will mix with sea water |
