What does climate mean?
It is defined as the average weather conditions over 30 years.
How do we know that the climate has changed drastically over the years?

1. Fossils of animals

2. evidence of glaciation in regions that are now free of ice

3. evidence from ice cores in the Greenland and Antarctica.

How can we see what the temperature was over 30 years ago?

1. we can look at ice cores- you take the middle bit of come ice and you can study the amount of carbon dioxide in it and the amount of air bubbles.

2. tree rings- a tree grows layers ever year. If they were fat rings is was raining a lot and if the rings were really small, then a drought happened.

What are the causes of change in climate ?

1. Volcanic eruptions - Large eruptions emit vast quantities of dust and gases such as sulphur dioxide into the atmosphere. This blocks out or absorbs incoming solar radiation so the Earth cools. An example of this is Mt. Pinataubo in 1991.

2. Sunspot activity- Sunspots are the darker areas on the Sun's surface- they are a sign of greater solar activity.

What is the climate of the UK?
It is wet and cold

What are the several impacts on the UK's climate?
Latitude affects how much Sun the UK gets and how strong it is during different seasonsThe North Atlantic current keeps the UK warmer than other places of the same latitudeAir masses bring weather conditions with them. The UK is affected by five air massesThe prevailing winds from the Atlantic Ocean in the south west. They pick up moisture from the sea and often bring rain to the UK.Possible changes to the UK’s climate include:* Average temperature rise
* Less predictable rainfall patterns with drier summers
* Changing seasons – possibly longer summers and more extreme cold in winter
