what is calvin cycle?

Calvin cycle is the second phase of photosynthesis that makes sugars.Calvin cycle is also called light independent reaction because it does not require light. However it needs the products from light reactions to synthesize sugar.

What are the steps of the Calvin cycle?

Calvin cycle may be divided in three steps.

Carbon fixation - A molecule of CO2 attaches to ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate (RuB)P, a five carbon molecule; this results in a six carbon compound that splits in half creating phosphoglyceric acid or PGA.

Reduction - The second step of the Calvin cycle uses ATP and NADPH to convert PGA to a three carbon sugar G3P.

Regeneration - In the third step of the cycle, the carbons of G3P are rearranged to make RuBP.
