Cubism

Design Concept not based on Nature and not realistic. Inspired by Pablo Picasso who applied elements of african trial art. Bold chiseled look. like masks.

Characteristics of Cubism

Analytical— shapes, textures, values are the subjects of the painting. wanted to show as the mind imagines it with all sides at once



Futurism

Revolutionary movement starting in italy. emphasized speed, technology, youth, violence. started the Words in Freedom style.

DADA

Anti-art had strong negative and destructive element. rebelled against war, faith, conventional moral codes. They mocked art works.

Photomontage

John Heartfeild used it as propaganda. Symbolized the Patheticness of Germany. He Specifically targeted Natzi leaders. he never took images but instead used glossy prints from magazines and newspapers.

Surrealism

Came from DADA movement but wanted to unlock the potential of the unconscious mind.

Expressionism

Expressionism came from Germany before WWI trying to not depict object reality but subjective emotions and personal responses to subjects and events. Deep sense of social Crisis.

Solarization

Recording on a negative or on a photographic print the partially reversed tone. So think of the negative filter on your phone

Bernhard used this poster style. Flat color shapes. basic shapes. reducing. Schmidt also used this style in his art work of having simple images with type.
