Antacids: aluminum hydroxide gel, calcium carbonate, aluminum hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide (malox)


Side effects

Aluminum and calcium compounds cause constipation, while magnesium causes diarrhea

Interventions for amphojel, titralac, aluminum hydroxide and maalox

Compounds contain sodium, so use with caution if patient has cardiac or renal disease. Absorption of some antibiotics, iron and INH reduced when taken with antacids. Oral contraceptives may have decreased effects when given with antacids

Teach patients when taking aluminum hydroxide, calcium carbonate, aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide

Allow one hour between antacids and other meds

Antidiarrheal meds: pepto bismol and kaopectate can cause

Darkening of tongue and stools, and constipation


Check for salicylate toxicity(see if already taking ASA) don't take more than 48 hours or if fever present


Don't gjve to children less than 3 or any child under 21 with a viral infection (Reyes syndrome)

Lopromide (imodium) can cause

Constipation and drowsiness (check CNS)

Diphenoxylate Hydrochloride and Atropine Sulfate (lomotil) can cause

Dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, tachycardia, paralytic ileus. May potentiate action of depressants and barbituates

Paregoric (camphorated tincture of opium) can cause

Nausea, constipation, and narcotic dependence

Antimetics: promethazine (Phenergan) can cause

Drowsiness, Dizziness, dry mouth, urinary retention, constipation

Antimetic: trimethobenzamide HCL (tigan) can cause

Headache and drowsiness

Antimetic : prochlorperazine Dimaleate (Compazine) can cause

Drowsiness, diploplia, photo sensitivity (wear clothing when in the sun), extrapyramidal reactions

Antimetic: ondansetron (Zofran) can cause

Drowsiness, headache, diarrhea, or constipation and transient elevation of liver enzymes

Antimetic : Metoclopramide (Reglan) can cause

Drowsiness, dystonic reactions, extrapyramidal reactions and restlessness

Antimetic : dimenhydrinate (dramamine) can cause

Drowsiness, blurred vision, hypotension and palpitations

Antimetic ; meclizine (antivert, bonine) can cause

Drowsiness, dry mouth, blurred vision, and excitation


Contraindicated with glaucoma

Meds for ulcers: gastric protectant: sucralfate (carafate): used to treat

Duodenal ulcer, it adheres to and protects the ulcers surface by forming a barrier. Action lasts Up to 6 hours, give 2 hours before or after other meds.


Can cause constipation, flatulence, and vertigo

Meds for ulcers: misoprostol (cytotec), used to prevent

Gastric ulcers, give with meals, causes abdominal pain and diarrhea (notify doctor if severe or last more than 1 week) contraindicated during pregnancy it causes miscarriages

Histamine 2; (H2): receptor antagonists: tagamet and Zantac


Action:

Suppress secretion of gastric acid, alleviates heartburn and promotes healing,


Can be given P O, I M or I V

Side effects of tagamet and zantac

Diarrhea, headaches and dysrhythmias. Tagamet can cause confusion and Dizziness, few side effects seen with Zantac

Teach patients taking tagamet and zantac

Avoid antacids and other meds within one hour of dose, avoid alcohol, smoking, and caffeine, they all increase gastric acid

Protein pump Inhibitors ; esomeprazole (nexium), lansoprazole (Prevacid), omeprazole (prilosec), rabeprazole (aciphex),


Action:

Suppress gastric acid secretion

Nexium, Prevacid, prilosec, aciphex


Side effects

Dizziness, diarrhea, abdominal pain, renal failure


Potential for increased dementia

Teach patients taking nexium, Prevacid, prilosec, and aciphex

Avoid antiacid and other meds within one hour of dose


Avoid alcohol, smoking and caffeine they all increase gastric acid

G I symptoms or obstruction


Take with a full glass of water

Stimulants : bisacodyl (dulcolax) serra (cascara)

Nausea and bloating

Lubricant : mineral oil

Nausea and pruritus


Long term use can cause fat soluble vitamin deficiency

All Laxatives are contraindicated

With acute abdomen (fever, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain)


Chronic laxative use can cause Hypokalemia
