Antacids

Works by immediately neutralizes stomach acid but has short lasting effect.



- Never to be taken with ANY other meds.



- Take 1 hr before/after other meds.


Benefits: GERD, lowers phosphate levels and Peptic ulcers.



Contraindications: Heart failure

Histamine 2 Receptor Antagonists

- Reduces gastric secretions by blocking H2 receptors in belly.


- Long last relief


- Suffix: -tidine


- 30 minutes before meals


- Treats GERD, and duodnal/gastric ulcers.

Proton pump inhibitors

- MOA: Inhibits pepsinogen, an enzyme required for gastric acid secretion.


- Suffix: -prazole


- Uses: Prevents stress ulcers, Heartburn, GERD, stomach acid.


- Side effects: Porous bones, GI upset & C-diff.


- Take 30 min. before meals

Mucosal protectants

MOA: Forms a thick paste that adheres to ulcers.


- Admininster 1 hr before/after meals, and at bedtime [4x a day]


- Do not mix with other meds.


- Side effects: Constipation

Prostaglandins

- MOA: Decrease stomach acid secretion and increase the production of protective mucus in the stomach. It also increases the production of bicarbonate, which helps thicken the mucus, allowing it to produce new cells.


- Uses: Prevents ulcers, Labor induction


- Side effects: Dysmenorrhea, GI upset


- Contraindications: Pregnancy

Aluminum Hydroxide [Amphojel]

Class: Antacid



MOA: Neutralizes the stomach acid and binds phosphate in the stomach.



Uses: Antacid, hyperphosphatemia



Side effects: Constipation

Calcium carbonate [Tums]

Class: Antacid



MOA: Neutralizes hydrochloric acid in gastric secretions.



Uses: Hypocalcemia, antacid, hyperkalemia, hypermangesemia



Side effects: Constipation

Sodium bicarbonate [Alka-seltzer]

Class: Antacid, Alkalinizing agent



MOA: Releases bicarbonate which is capable of neutralizing gastric acid.



Uses: Antacid, metabolic acidosis,



Side effects: Hypernatremia

Magnesium hydroxide [Milk of magnesia]

Class: Antacid, laxative



MOA: Neutralizes gastric acid by reacting with hydrochloric acid in the stomach to form magnesium chloride and water.



Uses: Heartburn, dyspepsia and constipation



Side effects: Diarrhea, hypermagnesemia
