What is a hematoma & what are some possible causes of it?
A hematoma is a collection of blood

(generally occurs secondary to a dead space left post-op w/o a drain)

Occurs due to:
trauma
inadequate hemostasis
failure to obliterate a dead space
poor litigation during a surgery
How do you diagnose a hematoma?
PAIN

occurs secondary to a localized swelling over the incision site

-increased localized temp over the incision
If you see a pulsating hematoma post-up, what does that mean?
It means you cut a large vessel, and you have to bring them back and repair it.
What are some of the complications arising from hematoma?
Delay in normal wound healing time
Skin slough
Infection
Pain
Calcification
In the early phase management of a hematoma, one would do what?
Extravasation of the hematoma either by compression (side to side) or aspiration
Re-opening of wound sterilely
Antibiotics to prevent infection
What is a seroma and how does it manifest?
A seroma is a collection of clear liquid that occurs when you damage the lymphatics and/or excess tissue damage.

It can also occur as a result of a reaction to a foreign body, such as sutures, implants, bone wax, gel foam.
Post-op edema, which is very common, can be prevented by:
Atraumatic sx technique
Compressive post-op dressing
RICE
NSAIDS
Immoblization
PT
