Function of the Respiratory System

Receiving O2 and clearing out CO2

Components of the Respiratory System

Respiratory Tract: Nose/Mouth. Pharynx, Larynx, Trachea, Bronchi, and Alveoli

Alveoli

Basic functional unit of the lung

Central components of the Blood system

Heart, vessels, blood

Main function of the Blood system

Delivering O2 to the entire body and organs, defense function, thermoregulation

Nervous System Organs

Brain and Spinal cord

General role of nervous system

Controlling the continuous activity of the entire body systems, including blood and respiratory systems

Failure of one of the triangle of life systems results in...

Failure to the other 2. Within 4 to 6 minutes, the brain will suffer irreversible damage - can lead to death.

What helps maintain normal blood pressure?

1. Cardiac output (Normal heartbeat)

2. Blood/Fluid volume (Normal blood and fluids)

3. Diameter change of Blood vessels

Cardiac Output

A normal beating heart pumps blood in amounts that are suitable for our needs and that maintains normal blood pressure. Damage to this output will lead to serious drop in blood pressure.

Blood Volume/Fluid Volume

A drop in blood pressure could be caused by a significant loss of blood or fluids (diarrhea/vomiting/sweating).

Blood Vessels

Our blood vessels possess the ability to change their diameter in response to blood pressure drop. This diameter can also change in the presence of an allergen (anaphylactic shock) or bacteria (septic shock), creating a situation in which we have sufficient blood in the body, but since the arteries are dilated, they are not able to carry the Blood to target organs.

What happens to our bodies when the blood pressure drops significantly?

Shock
