Ways to reduce the life hazard include

removing all of the victims, venting to draw the fire away from the victims, and confining the fire to an isolated area. Often the best way is to put out the fire.

Sequence of Actions to be Taken

locate, confine, and extinguish.

Need to locate where the fire is so you know where to stretch the line.

Confine and protect exposures accordingly.

Extinguish is last because you must locate and confine the fire first.

Protecting exposures

At times is best to confine rather than focus on protecting exposures. The spread of fire within a building is usually faster than at which the rate of the fire spreads to an exposed structure.

If a large area of a building or area is already heavily involved and is threatening another structure, it is reasonable to protect the exposed building first.

Let circumstances...

...dictate procedures.

It is impractical to specify actions in advance of every possible scenario. Don't just do it because that is what we always do. When in doubt, err on the side of caution.
