Give three ways that the fourth movement of Alexander Nevsky (on our Listening List) reflects the doctrine of socialist realism.
Stirring choral melodies in folklike style, sung in unison or simple two part homophony, suggest the unity and determination of the people, giving emotional depth to what is depicted on the screen. Mostly diatonic melodies and harmonies make the music immediately accessible, while occasional dissonance and unexpected turns make it engaging and distinctive as well. Modal melodies and orchestration convey a Russian sound, evoking both the strumming of Russian guitars and the clanging bells and prominent bass and percussion of the coronation scene from Musorgsky’s Boris Godunov.
