What are solid waste issues?
1. Disease spreading potential
2. More landfills needed
3. Air quality
4. Water quality
Defend 2 solid waste issues:
1. Solid waste contaminates water sources either through direct disposal into water resources or even from landfills.
2. Air quality is contaminated by solid waste because less space if available for disposal some areas burn the solid waste whcih can release toxins into the air.
List 4 major components of material that goes into a landfill?
1. Paper
2. Organics (yard waste)
3. Non paper organics (food)
4. Metals
5. Plastics
What are the most components of material that goes into a landfill?
* 40 % Paper
* 18% Organics
* 16% Non paper Organics
* 8% Metals
* 8% Plastics
What are the basic ways that solid waste is disposed?
1. Landfills--> 80%
2. Incineration --> 9%
3. Recycling --> 9%
4. Composting --> 2%
What do managers of wilderness realize?
1. The place i manage is unique, therefore one must manage it uniquely
2. Decisions must last 100-500 years-bio rule
..nature must heal itself but may take 500 or more years, sometimes not activity not acceptable and we fix it...
3. We humans cannot create this place, yet we can un-create it. = (
4. Carrying capacity a necessital tool: #'s activities
5. Best info needed for decisions
6. Biocentric Bias is a must: What is "good" for the natural system is acceptable; consideration for man is only if compatible with natural process.
7. Excessive people managment necessital: lots of off-site management
Defend any 3 important wilderness realizations as to management
1. The place i manage is unique and must be managed uniquely. We cant use the same methods or same standards for each wilderness becuase they may be experiencing different issues.
2. We cannot create this plcase, but can uncreate it. We do not have the power to create any wilderness. yet we need to realize how great our impact is on wilderness where we can harm it or destroy natural areas.
3. Carrying capacity is a necessital tool: #'s, activities. we need to make sure that use of a wilderness site does not exceed its carrying capacity. If the CC is exceeded we could be destroying a wilderness that may never be renewed.
Defend the importance of any 2 Wilderness issues.
* Lack of money
= funding is needed for more action to be taken for wildereness areas to be protected and for wilderness laws to be enforced
* Educating the public on wilderness values; even though a greater of population may not live in the wilderness everyone needs to understand the concept that where ever they live and thier lifestyle can impact the natural environement on the earth. Therefore, wilderness values will help minimize the impact on natural environments.
What are wilderness Issues (in mid 1980's)?
1. Lack of money
2. Educating the public on wilderness values
3. Best educational methods to use
4. Level of acceptable change
5. Training of managers/ planners
6. Non-conforming prior uses
7. Carrying capacity methods and standards
8. Consistency of management between agencies
9. Management of overused areas
10. visitor freedom and level or regulations (code of ethics)
List 4 ways to manage recreational impacts to natural resources
1. Educating users on behavior
2. Limiting # of individuals using an area at one time
3. Limiting length of stay
4. Limiting types of activities allowed
5. Zoning: by activity, use intensity, by time
defend any 2 ways to manage recreational impacts to natural resources.
4. Limiting types of activities allowed: depending on how sensitive the natural area is only certain types of activities should be allowed.
5. Zoning: by activity, use intensity, by time. To avoid excesive use to a natural area zoning should be implemented to certain types of recreational users. For example, do not allow horse back riding and mountain biking on the same trail.
List any 4 recreation issues
p. 130-131= solutions.
Issues: p. 127
1. lack of funding
2. Loss of recreation opportunities due to recreational impacts
3. Resource Protection
4. Education and info for dispersed areas.
Defend the importance of any 2 recreation issues.
p. 130-131= solutions.
1. lack of funding: less funding means that less recreation supervision and opportunites are provided to the public.
2. Loss of recreation opportunities due to recreational impacts: because certain places have already been harmed by poor recreational use of an area..now less areas are available to be used for that recreational activity. EX. OHV use and harm to sand Dunes.
