Private pilot privileges and limitations

1. Private pilot may not act as PIC of an aircraft that is carrying passengers or property for compensation or hire.


2. Private pilot may not pay less than the pro rate share of the operating expenses of a flight with passengers, if the expenses involve only fuel, oil, airport expenditures, or rental fees.


3. Private pilot may act as PIC of an aircraft for compensation or hire in connection with any business or employment, if the flight is incidental to that business or employment.


4. Private pilot may act as PIC of a charitable, nonprofit, or community event flight.


5. A private pilot may be reimbursed for aircraft operating expenses that are directly related to search and rescue operations, if the expenses only involve fuel, oil, airport expenditures, or rental fees. And the operation is sanctioned by controlling agency.


6. A private pilot who is an aircraft salesman and who has at least 200 hours of logged flight time may demonstrate an aircraft in flight to a prospective buyer.

Basic Med

BasicMed allows a pilot to conduct certain operations using a U.S driver’s license instead of a medical certificate as long as the pilot meets the following conditions.


1) the pilot must completes an approved medical education course in the preceding 24 calendar months


2) the pilot must receive a comprehensive medical examination from a state licensed physician in the previous 48 months

Type rating requirement, complex, high performance, tail wheel

1. To act as PIC of a complex, high performance airplane, you must receive and log ground and flight training and receive a logbook endorsement.


- A complex airplane is defined as an airplane with retractable landing gear, flaps, and a controllable pitch propeller.


- A high-performance airplane is defined as an airplane with an engine of more than 200 horsepower.


2. A person may not act as PIC of any aircraft unless he holds a type rating for that aircraft


1) A large aircraft (more than 12,500lb)


2) A turbojet-powered aircraft


3) Other aircraft specified by the FAA thorough aircraft type certification procedures.

Immediate Notification

Even when no injuries occur, an airplane accident resulting in substantial damage must be reported to the nearest NTSB field office immediately.


The following incidents must also be reported immediately to the NTSB


1) Inability of any required crew member to perform normal flight duties because of in flight injury or illness


2) In flight fire


3) Flight control system malfunction or failure


4) An overdue airplane that is believed to be involved in an accident


5) An airplane collision in flight


6) Turbine engine failure

Preservation of aircraft wreckage, mail, cargo

Accident? Any occurrence which takes place any person about substantial damage, serious injury.


Incident? An occurrence other than an accident, which affects or could affect the safety of operation.


Prior to time the board of representative takes custody of aircraft wreckage, such wreckage may not be disturbed or moved except to


1) Remove persons injured or trapped


2) Protect the wreckage from further damage


3) Protect the public from injury

810.15 Reports and statements to be filed

The operator of an aircraft shall file a report on board within 10 days after an accident.


A report must be filed within 7days if an overdue aircraft is still missing.


A report on an incident shall be filed only when requested by an representative of the board.

Basic Med privilege and limitation

The PIC of an aircraft operating under BasicMed must adhere to the following limitations


1) The aircraft may not be certificated to carry more than 6 occupants.


2) The aircraft may not have a maximum certificated takeoff weight of more than 6,000lb.


No portion of the flight may be


1) carried out above 18,000ft MSL


2) conducted outside the US unless authorized by the country in which flight is conducted


3) carried out at an IAS greater than 250kt.
