ad hominem
Attempting to rebut a source's argument or claim on the basis of considerations that logically apply to the source rather than the argument or claim.
popularity from argument
Accepting or urging others to accept a claim simply because all or most or some substatial number of people believe it.
wishful thinking
Accepting a claim because you want it to be true, or rejecting it because you don't want it to be true.
argument from outrage
An attempt to persuade others by provoking anger in them, usually by inflammatory words, followed by a conclusion of some sort.
straw man
Someone ignores an opponent's actual position and present in its place a distored, exaggerated, or misrepresented version of that position.
red herring (smoke screen)
An irrelevant topic or consideration introduced into a discussion to divert attention from the original issue.
post hoc
Cause and effect. Post hoc also manifests itself as a bias towards jumping to conclusions based on coincidences.
group think fallacy
Fallacy that occurs when someone lets identification with a group take the place of reason and deliberation when arriving at a position on an issue.
scare tactics
Trying to scare someone into accepting or rejecting a claim. A common form merely describing a frightening scenario rather than offering evidence that some activity will cause it.
Poisoning the well
Attempting to discredit, in advance, what a person might claim by relating unfavorable information about the person.
