Acromioclavicular joint |
A plane synovial joint connecting the lateral end of the clavicle to the acromion process. |
Acromion process |
Superior end of the scapula which tapers into a broad flat surface; the attachment site for the upper trapezius and deltoid muscles. |
Clavicle |
A round, S-shaped bone on the anterior side of the shoulder girdle. |
Coracoid process |
Projects from the anterior, lateral point of the scapula into the upper lateral corner of the chest. |
Glenohumeral joint |
A ball-and-socket joint made up of an articulation between the glenoid fossa of the scapula and the humeral head. |
Glenoid fossa |
The lateral, superior corner of the scapula which expands into a concave shallow cup. It serves as a socket for the shoulder joint. |
Head of humerus |
A long, cylindrical shaft that tapers into a spherical head. |
Humerus |
A long bone with a shape similar to the femur. |
Inferior angle of scapula |
Palpable bottom corner of the scapula. |
Infraspinous fossa |
Provides a broad attachment site for the infraspinatus of the rotator cuff. |
Manubrium |
At the top of the clavicle. |
Rotator cuff |
The tendons of four muscles encircle the front, top , and back of the glenohumeral joint like a cuff. |
Scaption |
To abduct the arms in the plane of the scapula. |
Scapula |
A flat irregular bone that lies along the back of the shoulder. |
Scapula neutral |
A balanced resting position of the scapula in which it lays flat against the thorax and its medial border runs parallel to the thoracic spine. |
Scapular winging |
A condition in which the medial border of the scapula is raised indicating a weakness of the serratus anterior muscle. |
Scapulohumeral rhythm |
The ratio of movement between the glenohumeral and scapulothoracic joints during arm movements. |
Scapulothroacic joint |
The articulation space between the scapula and the ribs. |
Shoulder dislocation |
An injury to the glenohmeral joint in which the head of the humerus is pulled out of the socket |
Shoulder girdle |
An appendicular bony structure made up of the humerus, scapula, and clavicle bones that moves with the arms. |
Spine of the scapula |
A horizontal bony ledge that crosses the upper posterior surface of the scapula and divides the scapula into two areas. |
Sternoclavicular joint |
Consist of the articulation of the medial end of the clavicle with the 1st rib and the manubrium. |
Subscapular fossa |
Covers the anterior surface of the scapula. |
Supraspinous fossa |
Provides an attachment site for the supraspinatus of the rotator cuff. |
