Extrinsic Muscles

Muscles that attach the limb to the trunk

Intrinsic Muscles

Muscles located between the bones of the limbs

Superficial Pectoral Origin

Descending: First sternebra (manubrium)

Transverse: Sternebrae 1-3 and fibrous raphe on the ventral midline

Superficial Pectoral Insertion

Crest of the greater tubercle of the humerus

Superficial Pectoral Innervation

Cranial pectoral nn.

Superficial Pectoral Actions

- When not bearing weight: Adduct the limb

-When bearing weight: Prevent the limb form being abducted

Deep Pectoral Origin

Sternebrae 1-8 and fibrous raphe on the ventral midline; deep abdominal fascia in the region of the xiphoid cartilage

Deep Pectoral Insertion

- Lesser tubercle of the humerus
- Greater tubercle and crest of the greater tubercle via a aponeurosis
- Medial brachial fascia

Deep Pectoral Muscle Innervation

Caudal pectoral nn.

Deep Pectoral Actions

- When the limb is advanced & fixed: Pull the trunk cranially

- When the limb is not bearing weight: Draw the limb caudally

-Adduct the limb

- Support the trunk

Feline Pectoral Muscles
It is very difficult to separate the descending and transverse portions of the superficial pectoral muscle

In addition they have a 2 additional pectoral muscles: Pectoantebrachialis and Xiphihumeralis

Pectoantebrachialis

Origination, Insertion & Action

Origination: Manubrium

Insertion: Superficial fascia of the proximal end of the antebrachium (ulna)

Action: Draws the arm medially (adducts)

Xiphihumeralis

Origination, Insertion, & Action

Origination: Xiphoid process

Insertion: Proximal end the of humerus, deep to the insertion of the deep pectoral m., via a long, thin tendon

Action: Same as deep pectoral muscle

Brachiocephalicus Components

Cleidocephalicus

(Cleidocervicalis & Cleidomastoideus)

Cleidobrachialis

Brachiocephalicus Attachment
Clavicular Intersection
Cleidocephalicus Attachment
Cleidocervicalis: Cervical raphe

Cleidomastoideus: Mastoid process of the temporal bone

Cleidocephalicus Innervation

- Accessory n. (cranial nerve XI)

- Ventral brs. of cervical spinal nn.

Brachiocephalicus Action

- Advance the limb

- Extend the shoulder joint

- Draw the head and neck to the side

Cleidobrachialis Attachment

Distal end of the cranial border of the humerus (dog) or ulna (cat)

Cleidobrachialis Innervation

Brachiocephalic nerve (ventral br. of C6 spinal n.)

Sternohyoideus Origin

- Manubrium

- First costal Cartilage

Sternohyoideus Insertion
Basihyoid bone

Sternohyoideus Innervation

Ventral brs. of cervical spine nn.

Sternohyoideus Action

Draw the tongue and larynx caudally

Sternothyroideus Origin
First costal cartilage
Sternothyroideus Insertion
Caudolateral surface of the thyroid cartilage

Sternothyroideus Innervation

Ventral brs. of cervical spinal nn.

Sternothyroideus Action

Draw the larynx & tongue caudally

Omotransversarius Origin
Distal end of the spine of the scapula and acromion

Omotransversarius Insertion

- Transverse process of the first cervical vertebra (wing of the atlas)

- Basioccipital bone near the tympanic bulla (FELINE)

Omotransversarius Innervation

Accessory n. (cranial nerve XI)

Omotransversarius Action

- Advance the limb

- Flex the neck laterally

Trapezius Origin
- Cervical portion: Median raphe of the neck (C3- C7)
- Thoracic portion: Supraspinous ligament ( T1-T9)
Trapezius Insertion
Spine of the scapula

Trapezius Innervation

Accessory n. (cranial nerve XI)

Trapezius Action

- Cervical portion: Draw the scapula craniodorsally

- Thoracic portion: draw the scapula caudodorsally

- Acting together: Elevate and abduct the thoracic limb

Rhomboideus Origin

Capitis: Nuchal crest of the occipital bone

Cervicis: Median raphe of the neck

Thoracis: Spinous processes of T1-T7
Rhomboideus Insertion
Dorsal border and adjacent surfaces of the scapula

Rhomboideus Innervation

Ventral brs. of cervical and thoracic spinal nn.

Rhomboideus Action
- Elevate the forelimb (scapula)
- Draw the scapula against the trunk

Latissimus Dorsi Origin

- Thoracolumbar fascia from the spinous processes of T7 - L7 (dog) ir T4 - T6 (cat)

- Last 2-3 ribs
Latissimus Dorsi Insertion
- Teres major tuberosity of the humerus
- Teres major tendon

Latissimus Dorsi Innervation
