The exchange of goods and ideas between New World(America) and the European countries. Named after the first European Explorer to the New World: Columbus

Mercantilism

The economic system in which the colony only exists for the benefit of the "Mothercountry". The colonies in America were only here to make the European ccountries stronger.

Jamestown

First SUCCESSFUL colony in the Americas. Created for economic(money) reasons. Located in present day Virginia.

Religious Freedom

The ability to practice your own personal religious beliefs without fear of injury from a government that may be controlled by another religion.

Self-Government

Representative Government

The people of a country choose citizens of their country to "represent" them and make decisions for them instead of having to vote on every law. See also: Republic

A group of elected officials that pass laws for the country. The term comes from the Latin word for "Law"makers.

1266. The first written document limiting the power of a King and establishing laws for a King to follow.

Virginia House of Burgesses

First Representative Government in America. Citizens of the colony elected representatives to make laws for them.

Fundamental Orders of Connecticut

First written document that set up a system of laws for a colony in America. Could be viewed as the first Constitution in America,

Mayflower Compact

Written agrement among the MEN of the Mayflower upon arrival in America. It was the first document establishing SELF-GOVERNMENT in America.

Plantation System

Economic System based on the use of slave labor for the creation and maintenance of large farms called plantations.

Religioius group that settled many of the New England colonies including Massachusetts Bay Colony
