what is the pharynx
the throat, lymphoid tissue called the tonsils on both side, and it contains the opening to the esophagus and trachea.
Where is the most common site for airway obstruction?
the larynx due to it is the smallest portion of the upper airway.
What is a larynospasm?
when the muscles of the upper airway constrict and close of the lower airway completly creating respiratory emergency.
what is a bronchospasm?
when the cris crossed muscles of the bronchi and bronchiols become constricted and obsrtuct the airways.
what is alveoli?
tiny air sacs that are responsable for gas exchange in the lungs, with a fine network of capillaries for transport.
What is surfactant?
It is the lipoprotein that lowers the surface tension with in the alveoli and prevents their wall from sticking together.
What produces surfactant?
type II alveolar cells
What are the fuctions of type I alveolar cells?
they are the gas exchange cell and what allows gas exchange to take place in th e alveoli
What happens if the plural fills with water or the chest cavity is opened?
the lungs will not be in contact with the chest which will alter the function of the pulmonary function.
what is venalation?
movement of air into and out of the lungs, breating.
what is respiration?
that exchange of gases in the lungs.
Where does oxygen diffues into the blood cells?
alveolar-capillary membrane
What is hypoemia?
when blood is not adequately oxygenated at the alveolar capillary membrane.
What is perfusion?
takes place in the cardiovascular system and is the circulation of boold to all body systems.
what is hypoxia?
poor oxygenation levels in the tissues and organs.
What happnens with poor ventilation?
insufficient amount of oxygen in the lungs for diffusion into the blood.
what is the mayjor muscle in breathing?
the diaphram
what is hyperventilation?
when a persons rate and depth increase to move large amounts of air into the lungs. happens when a person is experiances hypoxemia.
what is hypoventilation?
is when there is a decrease rate and depth of breathing and moves a small amount of air into and out of the lungs. hypoxemia is a result of this due to there is less air carring oxygen into the lungs.
what is lung compliance?
refers to the ease of lung inflation
