5 types of planes

Sagittal : vertical plane dividing body to left and right


Parasagittal : divides body to left and right not equal


Midsagittal: vertical divides body left to right equal


Frontal ( coronal): vertical plane divides body anterior (front ) posterior (back )


Transverse (horizontal ) : divides body into superior (upper ) and inferior (lower )



Oblique (slanted ) : a plane at angles to any of the above plane

Directional terms

Distal : further from Centre of the body


Proximal : nearer to Centre of body


Superior: upper part of the body ( towards head )


Inferior : lower part of body ( away from head


Anterior(ventral) : front of body


Posterior(Dorsal): back of body


Lateral : away form midline of body


Superficial : on surface of body


Deep: away from surface of body


Contra lateral - occur on opposite side of body


Unilateral - occurring on one side of body


Bilateral: occurring on both side


Prone : lying anterior down


Supine : laying anterior up (facing upward )
