Natural Law Theory

Morality is found in unchanging principles of moral/natural law in nature

Aquinas' 4 fundamental goods

Eternal Law- uncreated reason of God


Divine law- directs humans and other creatures to their supernatural end.


Natural law- the special way rational creatures participate in eternal law


Human law- bottom of hierarchy, law derived by humans.

Principle of double effect

action which causes serious harm may be acceptable if it is the unintended result of bringing about good.

just war theory

list of conditions in natural law to ensure that war is humanely conducted and directed towards establishment of lasting peace.

Jus ad bellum (conditions that must be met before war)

1. must be declared by legit authority


2.must be just cause


3.must be last resort


4.must be reasonable prospect of success


5. violence must be proportional to wrong being resisted.

Jus in bello (conditions for a just war)

1. non combatants should not be intentionally targeted


2. tactics must be in proportion to injury being redressed.


3.prisoners of war must be treated humanely.

Civil disobedience

necessary if human law is unjust and conflicts with moral law.
