What is pre-history and history?

Pre-history is the time before man recorded events, so they were unable to write. History is the period of recorded events of man.

What were the human conditions during the late Paleolithic era when art first was made?

People generally lived in small huts and used caves for shelter and ritual purposes. Inside their huts they prepared foods, manufactured tools, and processed skins.

What are the characteristics of prehistoric cave paintings? (2 examples)

Example one: hand dots in the brunel chamber at chauvet. Large dots were made by covering the palm with paint and applying it to the wall.


Example two: Spotted horse in the Pech-Merle Cave where the artists applied paint in dots, they would cover their palm with ocher before pressing it aganist the limestone.

What are the theories as to the purpose of cave paintings?

A magico-religious interpretation which is the choice to make animals appear lifelike, and to control them by fixing them within outlines. Shamanism, which is a belief in a parallel spirit world accessed through alternative states of consciousness

How were cave paintings created?

They would prepare the surface by scraping the limestone with stone tools. They then would engrave some images into the wall, with a finger if the limestone was soft enough or with a sharp flint.

What are some of the ways Neolithic Art reflects the new relationship of humans to their environment? (one example)

They began building more substantial structures, and choosing fixed settlement places on the basis of water supply, rather than moving seasonally. They now domesticated animals and plants instead of hunting and gathering what nature supplied. An example would be the small settlement that developed by the Jordan river at the site of Jericho.

One work of art that begins to tell a story is Royal Standard of Ur. It is panels that represent the dual aspects of kingship so the king as a warrior, a priest, and mediator with the gods.

One work of art is Akhenaten and His Family, it is piece of artwork that shows the story of a king and his consort facing each other with three daughters who are sitting on their laps and in their arms.

One work of art that shows this is Lady Sennuwy from the tomb of Thebes. Her function was a fertility object, to enhance family continuity among the living and regeneration of the dead into a new life in the beyond.
