What is hydraulic action? |
Hydraulic action is the force of the water breaking rock particles away from the river channel. |
What is abrasion? |
Abrasion is when eroded rocks picked up by the river scrape and rub against the channel, wearing it away. --Most erosion happens by abrasion. |
What is attrition? |
Attrition is when eroded rocks picked up by the river smash into each other and break into smaller fragments. The edges also get rounded off as they rub. |
What is solution? |
River dissolves some types of rocks . e.g chalk and limestone. |
What types of rocks are dissolved by rivers? |
Chalk and limestone. |
What are the four processes of erosion? |
Hydraulic Action, Abrasion,Attrition, Solution. |
What are the four processes of transportation? |
The four processes of transportation are: traction, saltation, suspension and solution. |
What is traction? |
Traction is when large particles like boulders are pushed along the river bed by the force of the river. |
What is saltation? |
Saltation is when pebble sized particles are bounced along the river bed by the force of the water. |
What is suspension? |
Suspension is when small particles like silt and clay are carried along by the water. |
What is solution? |
Solution is when soluble materials dissolve in the water and are carried along. |
What is deposition? |
Deposition is when a river drops the eroded material it's transporting. |
When does deposition occur? |
Deposition occurs when the river slows down and loses velocity. |
Why do rivers slow down and deposit material?(Give four reasons) |
1. The volume of the river falls. 2. The amount of eroded material increases. 3.The water is shallower e.g on the side of the bend. 4. The river reaches it's mouth. |
